Types of Words in the Arabic Language (part 1)

There are three types of words that exist within the Arabic language:

1. The Noun –
2. ُالاسْم (al ism)
2. The Verb – ُالفِعْل (al fi’il)
3. The Particle – ُالْحَرْف (al harf)

In this week’s newsletter we shall focus on the noun and how to recognise it within the Arabic language.

What is a noun?

كَلِمَةٌ دَلَّتْ عَلَى مَعْنًى فِي نَفْسِهَا وَلَمْ تَقْتَرِنْ بِزَمَنٍ
It’s a word which has a meaning within itself and it remains the same regardless of the tense it’s used in.

Example of a noun: ُالْمَسْجِد – Al-masjid

An example of it being used in the past tense:

ذَهَبَ زَيْدٌ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ.

Zayd went to the masjid.

Example of a noun being used in the present tense:

يَذْهَبُ زَيْدٌ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ.

Zayd is going to the masjid.

Example of a noun being used in the future tense:

سَيَذْهَبُ زَيْدٌ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ غَدًا إنْ شَاءَ اللهُ تَعَالَى.

Zayd will go to the masjid tomorrow, if Allah wills.

How can we recognise a noun in the Arabic language?

The noun in the Arabic language has a variety of different signs to recognise it, the easiest way to recognise nouns are through identifying one of these signs:

1. Tanween (ً ٍ ٌ ) – it’s a double fathah, or a double kasrah or a double dhammadh that can exist on the end of nouns.
Example: مُحَمَّدٌ/مُحَمَّدٍ/مُحَمَّدًا

2. The term (ْال) going in front of the noun. When this happens the tanween becomes a single vowel (َ ِ ُ )

Example:

بَيْتٌ —> البَيْتُ/بَيْتًا —> البَيْتَ/بَيْتٍ —> البَيْتِ
