Principle: Types of Words in the Arabic Language.

There are three types of words that exist within the arabic language:

1. The Noun – ُالاسْم
2. The Verb – ُالفِعْل
3. The Particle – ُالحَرْف

In this week’s newsletter we shall focus on the verb and how to recognise it within the Arabic language.

What is a verb?

كَلِمَةٌ دَلَّتْ عَلَى مَعْنًى فِي نَفْسِهَا وَاقْتَرَنَتْ بِأَحَدِ الْأَزْمِنَةِ الثَّلَاثَةِ: المَاضِي والْحَالِ والاسْتِقْبَالِ
It’s a word which has a meaning within itself and its meaning and structure changes based on the tense it’s used in, whether it be past, present or future.

Example of a verb being used in past tense:

أَكَلَ صَالِحٌ فَطُورَهُ قَبْلَ الذَّهَابِ إِلَى المَدْرَسَةِ.
Salih ate his breakfast before going to school.

Example of a verb being used in the present tense:

يَأْكُلُ صَالِحٌ الغَدَاءَ فِي المَدْرَسَةِ الآن.
Salih is eating lunch right now in school.

Example of a verb being used in the future tense:

سَيَأْكُلُ صَالِحٌ العَشَاءَ بَعْدَ المَغْرِبِ إن شاء الله.
Salih will have dinner after Maghrib prayer, if Allah wills.

How can we recognise a verb in the arabic language?

The verb in the arabic language has a variety of different signs to recognise it, the easiest way to recognise verbs are through identifying one of these signs:

1. The Feminine Taa with Sukuun (تْ) – this letter joins the end of past tense verbs to show you that the action was carried out by w single female/feminine species or object.

Example:

‎ِشَرِبَتْ هِنْدٌ عَصِيرَ التُّفَّاح
Hind drank apple juice.

2. the word (ْلَم) – Negation of action taking place in the past tense

Example:

لَمْ يُعَاقِقْ عُثْمَانُ وَالِدَيهِ
Uthman wasn’t disobedient to his parents.
